Organise/Sort albums by Date rather than Year

Just throwing out a suggestion to add the ability to organise albums by release date.

For tagging, I use MusicBrainz Picard which can embed two tags Date and Original Release Date. See here: https://picard-docs.musicbrainz.org/en/latest/variables/tags_basic.html

It is really helpful to organise my collection in this way. (I use Roon quite extensively but much prefer the UI here!) It can be extra helpful if you have a reissue as it stores both the original release date and also the date of the reissue. See attached image for a screenshot of the Sgt Pepper's 2017 Super Deluxe. The files have Date stored as 2017-05-26. and Original Release Date stored as 1967-05-26

Just throwing it out there as a suggestion in case it can be considered!

Thank you very much for the suggestion — I’m definitely taking it into consideration.

I can clearly see the value of having a way to show the original release date in the main view when it differs from the release date of the specific edition, and I will also look into using that information as a sorting option in the library.

I agree that this could be especially useful for reissues, deluxe editions, remasters, and other collector-oriented cases where both dates matter.

If you’d be willing to help, it would be very useful if you could send me just one track, even as an MP3, with the metadata structured the way you normally collect and tag your music. That would allow me to run proper tests on real-world files and evaluate the best way to support this in MusicCovered.

Thanks again — suggestions like this are genuinely very helpful.

Thanks for getting back to me! Yes I'd be happy to send some files if you can let me know an email.

Alternatively, I'd recommend testing MusicBrainz Picard if you can - so you can see how it gathers and adds metadata. I pretty much run everything through it! It's a free download: https://picard.musicbrainz.org/

It links up to the MusicBrainz site and pulls all sorts of metadata. I then use kid3 to tidy things up and make minor tweaks where I need more control.
